On 22 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis discussed current issues on the EU agenda at a meeting with the ambassadors of EU Member States residing in and accredited to Lithuania.

The Minister, together with the ambassadors present at the meeting, emphasized the importance of the Eastern Partnership and the need to give a European perspective to the countries showing the greatest progress and involvement. Landsbergis noted that EU support was now crucial for Moldova and Armenia, which were actively pursuing democratic change. He also called for close monitoring of the concentration of Russian troops on Ukraine's eastern borders and for Russia's efforts to change the strategic position of the EU's eastern neighbors, sometimes even with military force, to be taken seriously.  "Russia is using war as a tool of blackmail. It seeks to establish a part of European territory as a sphere of influence of Russia's legitimate interests. We must look for ways to reduce tensions, we must not give in to Russia's blackmail, " Landsbergis said.

According to the Minister, in order to put effective pressure on Mr Lukashenko's regime EU countries need to preserve solidarity and maintain a uniform approach to EU and US sanction enforcement.

The Minister thanked the EU institutions and Member States for their support in the face of China's economic, political and diplomatic pressure on Lithuania, and emphasized that the EU must act together and protect its members during crises.

The ambassadors of the EU Member States expressed solidarity with Lithuania and emphasized the importance of joint action of the EU Member States.
