The President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, met with the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, in Bucharest on Wednesday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Bucharest Nine and Nordic countries’ summit.

The President presented Lithuania’s priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027. The two leaders also discussed bilateral relations, the security situation in Europe, and issues of historical memory.

According to the President, Lithuania will assume the EU Presidency in the middle of the political cycle, which will require continuing and finalizing a broad range of legislative and other initiatives.

In the field of security and defence, key EU initiatives will be actively advanced, including the European drone defence system and the Eastern Flank monitoring mechanism. Important decisions in the areas of military mobility and cybersecurity will also be coordinated.

During the meeting, the President emphasized that Lithuania attaches particular importance to issues of historical memory, noting that preserving Europe’s historical legacy requires collective efforts, especially in the current context.

Lithuania’s initiative to establish a memorial in Brussels dedicated to all victims of 20th-century totalitarian regimes was also presented. The memorial would serve as a symbol of Europe’s shared remembrance of its complex past. Support from EU Member States and institutions is being mobilized for this initiative, and Romania has been invited to join its implementation.
